Argentina international defender Cristian Romero has completed a permanent move from Tottenham Hotspur to Atlético Madrid in a deal worth €40 million, one of several confirmed transfers around Europe on Saturday.

Romero becomes Atlético's latest defensive addition as the Spanish side strengthens its backline ahead of the new La Liga season, which kicked off the same day. The centre-back had been a regular fixture for Tottenham since joining from Atalanta in 2021, and was part of Argentina's squad at the 2026 World Cup.

The move comes as Europe's top clubs continue major summer business ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline. Elsewhere on deadline-adjacent business, Real Madrid have added Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konté, and Bernardo Silva this summer following José Mourinho's return to the club, while cross-town rivals Atlético continue reshaping their squad under a similarly ambitious rebuilding plan.
