The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Governor Ademola Adeleke winner of the Osun State governorship election, securing him a second term after a closely fought race against APC's Bola Oyebamiji.
State Returning Officer Professor Joshua Ogunwole announced the result at the INEC collation centre in Osogbo early Sunday morning, following overnight collation of results from all 30 local government areas. Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to Oyebamiji's 444,815, a margin of 66,252 votes. ADC's Najeem Salaam finished a distant third with 17,180 votes. "Ademola Jackson Adeleke, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected," Ogunwole said.
Adeleke, contesting on the Accord Party platform, won 19 of the state's 30 local government areas, including Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, and Osogbo, while Oyebamiji carried the remaining 11. Turnout was strong: of 2,339,544 registered voters, 1,010,684 were accredited and 985,097 valid votes were cast. Supporters flooded the streets of Osogbo in celebration following the announcement, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party's Peter Obi were among those to publicly congratulate Adeleke on his re-election.
