The Defence Headquarters says its official X (formerly Twitter) account has been compromised, warning the public to disregard any content posted from the account until it regains full control.
Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the incident, discovered Saturday, is being treated as a cybersecurity matter, with technical measures already activated to secure the account. A Premium Times check found the account, which has more than 980,000 followers and still carries its verification badge and military gallery, had been flooded with cryptocurrency-related posts unrelated to the armed forces.
The DHQ urged the public to rely instead on its verified Facebook page ("Defence Headquarters Nigeria"), Instagram (@defenceheadquarters), and WhatsApp channel for accurate updates while efforts continue to restore the account. The breach is notable given the account's role as one of the military's primary channels for announcing combat operations and other official updates.
