The Nigerian military has recorded a 213 percent increase in the number of terrorist fighters and their associates surrendering to troops in the North East over the past week, in what officials describe as a sign of mounting pressure on insurgent groups.
The development follows sustained operations by troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), combining coordinated ground actions, targeted engagements against identified terrorist positions, and efforts to disrupt terrorist logistics and supply routes across the theatre. Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed the figures in a statement issued Wednesday.
"During the period under review, the Theatre recorded a 213 percent increase in terrorist surrenders compared with the preceding week," Goni said, though the military did not release the specific number of surrenders behind the percentage. Two high-profile terrorist members reportedly surrendered with arms, ammunition, and other military equipment on Wednesday alone.
The Theatre Command said the surge reflects a "growing number of terrorist fighters and associates abandoning terrorist activities," attributing it to sustained military pressure that has weakened insurgents' operational capacity and cohesion. Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed it would continue combining offensive operations with surrender channels for those willing to lay down arms, and urged members of the public to continue sharing credible information with security agencies.
