Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of aiding suspected APC thugs to intimidate voters and disrupt Saturday's governorship election, alleging that police tear-gassed voters in Modakeke and Obaagun to force them away from polling units.
"As I am voting right now, I have just received a call in Modakeke and Obaagun that the police are aiding them to tear-gas people so that they can run away. And people are resolute. They just want to perform their civic duty," Adeleke told reporters shortly after casting his vote in Ede.
The governor alleged a specific police officer, nicknamed "London" and said to have been deployed from Port Harcourt, was hiding in Ede to disrupt voting there, and called on the Inspector-General of Police to redeploy him. Adeleke also raised concerns over the collation process, insisting results must move from polling units to wards to local governments before reaching the state level, and warned that the APC had allegedly attempted to introduce fake ballot papers. He said voting had remained peaceful in his own area, expressing confidence he would win the election.
