Nigeria's ten-time African champions lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-final, missing out on automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup.
Nigeria's Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-final at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, ending the defending champions' title defence earlier than expected.
The result also cost Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil — a prize that had been on the line for both sides going into the tie. Nigeria will instead have to negotiate the African playoff route to keep their World Cup hopes alive, extending an unbroken run of appearances at every edition of the tournament since it began in 1991.
It marks the first time the ten-time African champions have failed to reach at least the semi-finals of a centralised WAFCON tournament, and comes after a shaky group stage in which Nigeria lost their opening match to debutants Malawi before recovering with wins over Zambia and a 6-2 thrashing of Egypt to scrape through in second place.
Cameroon, by contrast, arrived unbeaten, having topped their group with wins over Mali and Ghana before a draw with Cape Verde. The Indomitable Lionesses had lost nine of their previous eleven meetings with Nigeria, including a 1-0 defeat to the Super Falcons in the quarter-finals of the 2022 edition — but this time held firm behind a goalkeeper who produced a string of crucial saves to deny Nigeria an equaliser, including a header from Uchenna Kanu in the second half.
Cameroon's win sets up a semi-final against tournament hosts Morocco, and confirms their own place at the 2027 World Cup. For Nigeria, attention now turns to a play-off against South Africa for one of the continent's remaining World Cup qualification spots.
