Tinubu Urges NLNG to Maximise Gas Reserves, End Flaring for Domestic Benefit

President Tinubu has urged the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) board to eliminate gas flaring and convert the resource into greater economic benefit for Nigerians, prioritising domestic gas utilisation.
President Bola Tinubu has urged the management of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to do all within its powers to ensure Nigeria derives maximum benefit from its gas reserves rather than allowing them to be flared.
The President made the remarks on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the State House, Abuja, while receiving members of the NLNG Board led by Managing Director and CEO, Engineer Adeleye Falade. Tinubu said the company’s focus should extend beyond increasing revenue from international markets to ensuring greater domestic utilisation of Nigeria’s gas resources, converting flaring from an environmental liability into an economic asset for consumers.
Falade told the President that NLNG’s capacity had increased to five of its six available trains following improved crude oil production, and that all of the company’s liquefied petroleum gas (cooking gas) output is currently supplied to the domestic market. He added that the company is keen to inaugurate a seventh production train, which would boost capacity by 35 per cent, and disclosed that the NLNG-financed Bonny-Bodo Road and Bridge project has been completed and awaits commissioning.
