President Tinubu has ordered the military, police and DSS to launch an immediate coordinated operation to rescue victims of a mass abduction at a mosque in Niger State, calling the attackers “enemies of peace and humanity.”
President Bola Tinubu has directed the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security and intelligence agencies to immediately launch a coordinated operation to rescue victims of the recent mass abduction in Niger State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said he was outraged by the abduction and killing of innocent citizens, describing the perpetrators as “enemies of peace and enemies of humanity, who will not go scot-free.” He ordered the Service Chiefs to provide regular briefings on the rescue until every victim is accounted for.
The abduction occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, when armed men attacked the Kpenya Mosque in the Dekara area of Borgu Local Government Area and surrounding communities, including Gidan-Zana and Sabon Gida, seizing worshippers during Friday gatherings. Residents said a large number of women, children and elderly people were taken. “Terror will not cow Nigeria. We will defend our people, protect our communities, and uphold the sanctity of human life,” Tinubu said, pledging federal support for relief, recovery and security reinforcement.
