Lagos Warns Against Illegal Use of Dealer Plates, Impounds 175 Vehicles

The Lagos State Government says it has apprehended 175 vehicles in a crackdown on the misuse of dealer number plates, warning of impoundment and prosecution.
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its prohibition on the permanent or everyday use of dealer number plates, warning motorists and dealers against deploying them outside their legally permitted purposes.
Under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, dealer plates are issued strictly for time-limited activities such as authorised test drives, vehicle inspections, delivery or collection of vehicles, and moving unregistered vehicles from ports or dealer premises to designated locations. Using them for private daily commuting or on already-sold vehicles awaiting registration is prohibited.
As part of enforcement, the state’s Vehicle Inspection Service apprehended 175 vehicles found in violation, the government said, adding that recovered dealer plates would be confiscated and the vehicles investigated. It warned that any vehicle using unauthorised, fake or obscured plates faces impoundment and prosecution, and urged full compliance for accountability and road safety.
