UK Warns Citizens Against All Travel to 11 Nigerian States Over Insecurity

The UK’s FCDO has updated its Nigeria travel advisory, warning against all travel to parts of 11 states and all-but-essential travel to 19 more states and the FCT, citing terrorism, kidnapping and intercommunal violence.
The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria, warning British nationals against all travel to parts of 11 states and against all but essential travel to parts of 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, citing rising insecurity, terrorism, kidnapping and intercommunal violence.
The advisory, published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, August 20, 2026, placed Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe in the North-East, and Katsina and Zamfara in the North-West, under its highest “advise against all travel” category. The same designation covers the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states — described as river and swamp locations accessible by boat but not by road.
Under the “all but essential travel” category, the FCDO listed Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto in the north; Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue in the North-Central; and Abia, Anambra and Imo in the South-East, along with the FCT. The FCDO also urged caution in Lagos, particularly on the mainland, and warned that travel insurance could be invalidated if citizens travel against its advice.
