Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after a battle with stage-four cancer, his family has confirmed.
Veteran Nollywood actor, filmmaker and screenwriter Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after a battle with stage-four cancer. He died on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, Kira Hassan, during an emotional Instagram Live session, and separately by veteran actor Jide Kosoko and a family friend. The news came just days after the actor’s family had publicly appealed for medical assistance as his condition deteriorated — and five days after the family had dismissed an earlier, false report of his death.
Born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, Ogogo built a career spanning more than four decades and became one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba cinema. He also featured in major contemporary productions, including the acclaimed film “Aníkúlápò,” and earned honours including the City People Movie Lifetime Achievement Award. He is survived by his wives and children, with funeral arrangements to be announced. Tributes have poured in from colleagues including Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola and Saheed Balogun.
